SESSION VI

MECHANISMS OF SURGICAL CONTROL OF DIABETES
(7:30 – 9:15 am)

Session Chair

David Cummings (USA)

Program Committee
Judith Korner (USA)
Carel le Roux (UK)
April Strader (USA)

Objectives
• To present and discuss data suggesting that the remarkable anti-diabetic impact of certain gastrointestinal operations, especially gastric bypass, cannot be accounted for by solely decreased food intake and reduced body weight
• To present and discuss data supporting the prevailing theories to explain weight-independent anti-diabetes effects of GI surgery including:
• Distal intestinal hypothesis
• Proximal intestinal hypothesis
• Gastric hypothesis
• Other hypotheses
• Attempt to prioritize future research directions to gain a greater molecular understanding of the mechanisms mediating weight-independent anti-diabetic effects of GI surgery

Keynote Lectures
• The Role of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Glucose Homeostasis-Carel le Roux (UK)
• Overview of Hormonal Effect of GI Surgery and Hypothesis on the Mechanisms of Surgical Control of Diabetes- David Cummings (USA)
